MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin- Former President Donald Trump, the presumptive nominee for the Republican nomination for president, announced Monday afternoon that he has chosen Ohio U.S. Sen JD Vance as his vice presidential running mate.
Trump reportedly called Vance Monday morning to tell him the good news as the Republican Convention began Monday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Vance chosen for the prominent role to run with Trump over Sens. Marco Rubio and Tim Scott, and North Dakota Gov. Doug Bergum.
An author, venture capitalist and former marine whom Trump endorsed for senator before he won the seat over former congressman Tim Ryan in 2022, Vance, a Harvard graduate, is 39-years-old, nearly 40 years younger than the 78-year-old Trump.
Sources said that some Republicans wanted Vance in an effort to counter Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in a potential run by Harris for president in 2028.
Trump and President Joe Biden are the respective presumptive nominees for the Republican and Democratic parties with the Nov 5 presidential election nearing.
The nation's first female and first Black vice president, Harris purportedly told reporters Monday that she is more than ready to debate Vance before this year's presidential election. She wrote in a post on Facebook that "Vance supports a nationwide abortion ban and voted to block protections for IVF."
Articulate and clean cut, Vance is not well-known among traditional voters but is known in political circles. He rose to fame in 2016 with his memoir, "Hillbilly Elegy," which documents his upbringing in Appalachia.
