May 6, 2018 marked the fifth-year anniversary of the escape, after a decade of captivity, of Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight and Amanda Berry from Ariel Castro's Seymour Avenue home on Cleveland's west side, the home of which has since been demolished.
The rally, which was covered by all of Cleveland's mainstream media, was held on Seymour Avenue in front of Castro's since demolished home.
The three keynote speakers for the Seymour Avenue 5th anniversary rally were state Rep activist and women's and children's rights activist CNN hero Laura Cowan, activist and journalist Kimberly F. Brown of the Brown Report Newspaper, and activist and public school teacher Melissa Svigelj Smith of Badass Teachers Association. Other speakers include family members of raped and murdered women and girls, and activists Marion Clarke of Planned Parenthood, Olga Rosado of the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, Khalid Samad, Genevieve Mitchell, Patrice Brown, Don Bryant, Alfred Porter Jr, Dr. Stewart and Valerie Robinson, and Princess Dicee Moore.
