CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM. CLEVELAND, Ohio- Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams (pictured) is among the all-Black honorees the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) Cuyahoga County chapter will recognize tonight, May 5, at a gala affair at the Doubletree by Hilton in Beachwood.


Williams is an award recipient as are Woodmere Mayor Benjamin Holbert, a former local anchorman elected mayor last year of the largely Black suburban village, Latasha Brown of the greater Cleveland chapter of the National Pan Hellenic Council, David Glen Jr, who is national director for membership for the NCNW, and Anthony H Brown of the national alumni chapter of the United Negro Scholarship Fund.


A 32-year veteran of the Cleveland police force, Williams was elevated from deputy police chief to chief of police in 2014 by Mayor Frank Jackson, the city's third Black mayor.


The event chair is Kimberly Jones and the event co-chairs are Vivian Vasser and Yvonka Hall, who will serve as the mistress of ceremonies.


Chapter president Loretta Sharp Gray told Clevelandurbannews.com and Kathywraycolemanonlinenewsblog.com that "all of the honorees have made exceptional contributions to African -American women and the African-American community."


Chief Williams, said Gray, is bring recognized for his leadership, particularly in "enhancing the relationship between Cleveland police and the Black community."


The largely Black major metropolitan city of Cleveland is currently under a court-monitored consent decree for police reforms with the U.S. Department of Justice following heightened police killings of unarmed Black people in recent years, including 12-year old Tamir Rice in 2013, Tanisha Anderson, Malissa Williams,Timothy Russell and Brandon Jones.


Founded by the late Mary McCloud Bethune, an educator, the NCNW is a non-profit organization with the mission to advance the opportunities and the quality of life for African-American women, their families and communities.
