CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM-COLUMBUS, Ohio-Massachusetts Congressman Joe Kennedy III (D-4), a Democrat and member of the famous Kennedy clan who effectively delivered the Democratic response to President Donald Trump's 2018 State of the Union Address, is expected to keynote the Ohio Democratic Party Legacy Dinner on Sunday, March 15 at the convention center in Columbus.
Kennedy follows U.S House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as a speaker at the annual event, Pelosi headlining the political gathering last year and stressing the importance of Ohio in "voting blue" or, in other words, voting down the Democratic ticket.
ODP Chairman David Pepper said Kennedy is a rising star politically, and that Ohio, a swing state, is pivotal as the November 2020 election nears, its presidential primary election set for March 17, just two days after the upcoming Legacy Dinner.
“As is happening across the nation, Democrats are energized, formerly Republican suburbs are trending blue and voters across the state are waking up to Donald Trump’s many broken promises," Pepper said.
Pepper said that the Democratic presidential candidates are also invited.
A twin, a family man, and a former prosecutor, Congressman Kennedy has represented Massachusetts' fourth congressional district since 2013.
He is the son of former Massachusetts congressman Joe Kennedy II, a grandson of the late U.S. Senator and former United States Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, a grand-nephew of 35th president of the United States John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1967 and his President Kennedy's younger brother, the late U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy.
He is a great-grandson of Joseph Patrick Kennedy, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom. His great-grandmother Rose Kennedy was the daughter of John F. Fitzgerald, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and Mayor of Boston.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Kennedy was raised in the Boston area with his twin brother, Matthew Rauch Kennedy. After graduating from Stanford University he spent two years in the Dominican Republic as a member of the Peace Corps, and earned his Juris Doctor at Harvard Law School in 2009. He resigned as a prosecutor in early 2012 to run for the seat held by retiring Congressman Barney Frank.
Democratic presidential candidates have not yet announced if they will attend the Legacy Dinner in March.
Several of the candidates gathered in Ohio on Oct. 13 for the annual ODP state dinner, also held at the convention center in Columbus, and for the fourth Democratic debate two days later on Oct 15.
Last year's state dinner drew powerful Dems across the state, Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez and 2020 Democratic presidential candidates South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Tom Steyer, and Andrew Yang
Democratic nominee front runners former vice president Joe Biden and U.S. Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren were not in attendance for the state dinner but did participate in the debate, Biden visiting Ohio on Oct 31, two weeks after he and his Democratic opponents debated in Columbus
Incumbent President Trump, who is currently facing an impeachment conviction trial in the Senate after getting impeached in the House of Representatives, is fighting, he and his Republican comrades, to keep Ohio red (Republican) in 2020.
