CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM-COM-CLEVELAND, Ohio- Women's March Cleveland activists, who with support from area community activist groups, spearheaded rallies in Cleveland in support of women Syrian refugees and their families and called for an end to the civil war in Syria, are siding with Congress in its stance against President Trump's strategy of hastily withdrawing U.S. military troops from Northern Syria (Go to Cleveland19News for the full story and video on the rally led by Coleman on a demand for the end of the civil war in Northern Syria and support and protection of Syrian refugees and their families).
The president has called on other countries to stand up and fight Isis in Syria along with the U.S., though he says the U.S. has won its battle there, the House voting overwhelmingly last Wednesday to condemn his decision to withdraw American troops from Syria, a non-binding resolution that passed 354-60, and in a bipartisan fashion.
The Congressional resolution says Turkey should cease its military action in Syria and demands a serious and comprehensive plan for the withdrawal of American troops from the Arab nation.
U.S. officials have accused Syrian President Bashar Assad of being a war criminal.
Meanwhile, Turkey military forces continue to bomb villages with women and children in Northern Syria
A longtime Black activist of Cleveland and a community organizer, Coleman, who organized rallies in Cleveland for Women's March Cleveland relative to the war in Syria and the mistreatment of women Syrian refugees and their families, said that Women's March Cleveland activists " join Congress in condemning the president's military withdrawal strategies in Northern Syria and continue to also demand a prudent end to the war and the support and protection of women Syrian refugees and their families." The war began in 2011 and during the first year alone an estimated 400,000 Syrians were killed.
"We don't think we should go bomb a country and then allow children to be held hostage before a government that is disenfranchising them," Coleman told Cleveland 19 Action News at a rally she led on Public Square in downtown Cleveland on the Syrian war and U.S. air strikes.
In addition to Coleman, the other speakers at that rally included activists Shayne Terry, Lucinda Garmus, Cheryl Lessin, the Rev. Pamela Pinkney-Butts, Arnold Shurn, Juanita Brent, who is now a state Rep from Cleveland, Melissa Svigelj-Smith, Genevieve Mitchell, Kari Oatman Nicholson, and Valerie Robinson.
Cleveland activists, led by Women's March Cleveland, had been calling for President Trump and the federal government to allow more than 75,000 Syrian refugees into the country.
"What's going on over in Syria is just completely intolerable and we have to accept more of them here because there's no end in sight for what's going on over there," said Lucinda Garmus at one of the rallies in Cleveland.
