NEW YORK CITY-David Dinkins, the first and only Black mayor of New York City, has died.

Dinkins passed away at his home in Manhattan last night, and of natural causes, a family spokesperson said.

He was 93.

His death comes just a month after that of his wife Joyce.

A Democrat, Dinkins became mayor of the nation's largest city in 1989, defeating Republican Rudy Giuliani, also a former New York mayor and now a President Trump ally, and one of Trump's attorneys relative to his futile attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election that he lost earlier this month to Democrat and former vice president Joe Biden.

Dinkins was the city's 106th mayor, and he served from 1990-1993, narrowly losing his reelection bid to Giuliani in 1993.

He was also a lawyer and an author.

He was born in 1927 in Trenton, New Jersey. He was drafted, served as a Marine and later graduated from Howard University and Brooklyn Law School. He served in the state assembly before later becoming president of the board of elections, a city clerk and Manhattan borough president

In a memoir he later wrote, the city's first Black mayor says he lost his 1993 bid for reelection because of racism.

"When asked why I lost, I used to say, 'Why do you think?' " Dinkins writes. "I did not want to say it out loud, but it's time. Now I say, 'Racism, plain and simple."
