CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM-CLEVELAND, Ohio- Community activists, community members and family and friends of 6-year-old Lyric Melodi Lawson (pictured), who died from a gunshot wound to the head while sleeping in her bed at the 1300 block of E. 71st Street and St Clair Ave in the South Collinwood Neighborhood on Cleveland's largely Black east side, will come together at 10 am on Sat , Oct 19 at Mount Sinai Baptist Church on the city's east side for funeral services as the Black child is laid to rest.
"We need a thousand Black men and women to come out to say farewell to Lyric as her killer or killers are still at large," said longtime Cleveland activist Art McKoy of Black on Black Crime and the Black Man's Army, who will speak on behalf of community activists at the homegoing celebration, "If you are truly tired of our children being murdered unmercifully, please join us for this necessary occasion."
A first grader at Hannah Gibbons Stem School in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Lyric died following a drive-by shooting where 28 shots were fired into the home where she was sleeping the night of the crime, the same home in which a man was shot and killed last month.
The girl's mother, aunt and five other children in the home the night of the deadly shooting were not harmed, sources said.
The suspect or suspects in Lyric's murder remain at large.
Witnesses told police a car was seen leaving the scene of the deadly shooting but gave no description other than it was dark-colored car, authorities said .
Mayor Jackson and members of city council, led by Ward 10 Councilman Anthony Hairston, whose ward is where the incident occurred, held a press conference on the steps of City Hall in response to the tragic killing to denounce gun violence.
