CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM -Cleveland, Ohio-Early voting kicked off Wed., Oct 10, 2018 at local and county boards of elections all across Ohio, including in Cuyahoga County, the second largest of 88 counties statewide and a 29 percent Black county that is a Democratic stronghold. It ends Nov 5.

Early voting is up statewide from last year.

Registered voters who have not voted can exercise their voices at the polls on election day Nov 6.

Nationally, there are 36 races for governor coupled with 35 races for the U.S. Senate and 435 races for the U.S. House of Representatives, with Democrats poised to take over the House.

The most watched political races in Ohio are the statewide races for governor, that pits Democrat Richard Cordray against Republican, Mike DeWine, secretary of state, state attorney general,  auditor, and treasurer, and two open seats on the seven- member Ohio Supreme Court, which is currently all-White and all-Republican.

State legislative seats for the Ohio House of Representatives and Ohio Senate are also up for grabs.

Races in Cuyahoga Countgy include common pleas and appeals court judge-ships, Cuyahoga County council, and county executive, which pits incumbent Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish, a Democrat, against Republican Peter Corrigan.

On criminal justice reform, State Issue 1, a constitutional amendment on the November ballot that minimizes penalties for drug affiliated crimes, including reducing some felonies to misdemeanors and providing more resources and rehabilitation for drug addicted Ohioans, is on the November ballot.

DeWine, who holds a narrow lead over Cordray for governor, vehemently opposes Issue 1, which is supported by the Cleveland NAACP, social services organizations, Black leaders, unions, offenders-support agencies, and many Democratic officials, among others, and Cordray supports the measure.
