CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM-CLEVELAND, Ohio - Former president Barack Obama will speak on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at the

Cleveland Metropolitan School District East Professional Center Gymnasium at 1349 E. 79th St. in Ward 7 in Cleveland at Superior Avenue (The old East High School), a campaign event for Ohio Democratic nominee for governor Richard Cordray, and his running mate for lieutenant governor, Betty Sutton, a former congresswoman.

Though it is free and open-to-the public, tickets are required via the campaign for organizing offices.

Cleveland is a largely Black major American city, and is led by Frank Jackson, the city's third Black mayor, a Democrat like Obama and Cordray.

A former Ohio attorney general and state treasurer, Cordray is a former Obama administration official and was the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

He is in a heated race this year for governor against Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, a former U.S. senator and the Republican nominee for governor.

A University of Chicago Law School graduate and a trained attorney, Cordray, 59, was Obama's first director of his consumer watchdog initiative.

A New York Times story says Cordray was an active watchdog under Obama and that "to Democrats, he was a champion of the public, fighting predatory companies and abusive practices that rip off ordinary people."
