CLEVELAND URBAN NEWS.COM- LOS Angeles-The father of pop singer Janet Jackson and the late pop icon Michael  Jackson who crafted and molded the Jackson 5 into one of the hottest pop groups of the 60s and 70s, is dead at 89 following a battle with cancer.


Joe Jackson reportedly died Wednesday in Los Angeles.


Funeral arrangements are pending.


A native of Arkansas, Joe married wife Katherine in 1949 and the couple had nine children, including Michael, pop singer Janet Jackson, Jermaine and La Toya.


He  began working on his children's' musical careers in the early 1960s while they were living in Gary, Ind. where he formed the Jackson 5, later dubbed the Jackson's, the former of which included brothers Jackie, Jermaine, Tito, Marlon and Michael as the lead singer, and the latter adding Randy, the youngest of the Jackson  brothers.

 

Jackson 5 hits include "I want you back," "Got to be there," and "ABC."

Michael went on to pursue a successful solo career, becoming one of the greatest pop icons worldwide. He died in 2009 of a drug overdose.
