CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM-CLEVELAND, Ohio -Funeral arrangements for nine-year-old Saniyah Nicholson, who died of a gun shot wound to the head after being shot on June 20 while sitting in her mother's car at the scene of a shootout on Cleveland's largely Black east side, have been announced.
The viewing is scheduled for Friday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Gaines Funeral Home on Lee Road in Maple Heights.
A wake will be held at Second Ebeneezer Baptist Church on East 71st Street in Cleveland at 9:30 a.m on Saturday, June 30, followed immediately by a funeral.
According to police reports, the girl's mother, Marshawnette Daniels, parked to pick up her teenage son at DNA Level Boxing Club on Lee Road and the girl, in the car with an adult sister, was killed when her mother went inside to get him.
Witnesses told police that the shootout was between a group outside of the gym and a group in a car, both groups allegedly exchanging gun fire that resulted in the tragic incident.
Nicholson, of Maple Heights, was the second child killed in Cleveland the week of her killing.
To date, six suspects, most of them teens, have been arrested relative to the tragic killing of Saniyah.
The murder rate in Cleveland is 37 per 100,000, research reveals, and Cleveland, notorious for the murders of 11 Black women on Imperial Avenue by serial killer Anthony Sowell, is ranked by Forbes as the fifth most deadliest city in the nation relative to its murder rate.
The largely Black major metropolitan city of Cleveland had 128 homicide deaths in 2017, authorities said, and they are mounting for this year. It has tallied some 61 unsolved murders of women dating back to 2004, data show.
