CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM, LOUISVILLE, Kentucky-Ridden by jockey Javier Castellano and with odds of 15-1, Mage edged Two Phil's, which came in second place, and Zandon, which took third, to win the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

“I never give up, I always try hard,” jockey Castellano said after winning the race before some 150,000 fans. “It took me a little while to get there, to finally get it.” It was Castellano's 16th try for a Derby win.

Gustavo Delgado-trained colt, Mage won the first race of its career, overtaking Two Phil's at Saturdays' Derby by one length.  And the coveted horse won the greatest share of the $3 million dollar Derby purse at $1.86 million. A $2 bet on Mage to win paid out $32.42 and a $1.00 trifecta on an exact 1-2-3 finish on Mage, Two Phil's and Angel of Empire paid out $982.36. Those who placed $1.00 superfecta bet on Mage, Two Phil's, Angel of Empire and Disarm to finish first through fourth in that exact order, won $15,643.60.

If Mage wins the Preakness and Belmont Stakes, the second and third legs of the Triple Crown respectively, it will have won the Triple Crown.

Unlike some of the Derby's in recent years, there were no major protests, or any at all for that matter, on behalf of Breonna Taylor. She was the 26-year-old Black woman who was arbitrarily gunned down by Metro-Louisville police in her apartment in 2020, a police shooting death that drew nationwide protests and a $12 million negligence and wrongful death settlement from the city for Taylor's family.
