CLEVELAND, Ohio-Most people who have not been vaccinated or previously infected with  COVID-19 will contract the strain of COVID dubbed the Delta- plus coronavirus variant, health experts said on Sunday.

"Most people will either get vaccinated, or have been previously infected, or they will get this Delta variant," Dr. Scott Gottlieb told CBS' "Face the Nation" on Sunday.
Commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration during the Trump administration,  Gottlieb said that "for most people who get this Delta variant, it's going to be the most serious virus that they get in their lifetime in terms of the risk of putting them in the hospital."
And this new strain is more transmissible, more dangerous, and at least 60 percent more contagious, data show.
Gottlieb has said that  the delta variant will likely target southern communities and that communities with lower vaccination rates and lower rates of prior infection,  poor and minority communities in particular.
About 49 percent of the  country's population has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19,  according to the US Centers for Disease Control and PreventionLouisiana, Mississippi, Wyoming and Arkansas are among the states with the lowest vaccination rates and are states where less than 35 percent of their population is fully vaccinated.
That data also show that African -Americans and the Latino-Hispanic populations have higher rates of hospitalizations and deaths due to COVID-19.
The Delta variant is a version of the coronavirus that has been found in more than 80 countries since it was first detected in India. It got its name from the World Health Organization, which names notable variants after letters of the Greek alphabet.
Statistics relative to the coronavirus pandemic that hit the nation with a vengeance in March of 2020 are bad enough, experts say, not to mention the damage the Delta Variant can bring. Currently there have been some 35 million regular coronavirus cases since March of 2020 in the US, and nearly 625,000 deaths. Worldwide data is worse with roughly 191 million regular coronavirus cases and some four million people dead from the vicious disease.

WASHINGTON D.C. — U.S. Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-3), a Columbus Democrat and currently the only Black in Congress from Ohio,  was arrested on Thursday during a Day of Action voting rights demonstration in Washington D.C.

Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Beatty was reportedly  arrested around 3:30 p.m. in the Hart Senate Office Building and was one of nine people arrested in the building's atrium.

"Fight for justice" supporters  chanted as Beatty was taken into custody and handcuffed.

Beatty issued a statement on Twitter that said, "I stand in solidarity with Black women and allies across the country in defense of our constitutional right to vote."

The congresswoman said that "we have come too far and fought too hard to see everything systematically dismantled and restricted by those who wish to silence us."

According to WSYX, U.S. Capitol Police said the group was arrested for "demonstrating in a prohibited area on Capitol grounds." The demonstrators were issued several warnings to stop before those who refused were arrested.

CLEVELAND, Ohio- U.S. Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-14), a progressive New York Democrat and Sen. Bernie Sanders ally, and a member of the "Squad," a nickname given to AOC and a group of three other progressive congresswomen of color who are not afraid to challenge the status quo in Washington, will campaign with front-runner congressional candidate Nina Turner across Ohio's largely Black 11th congressional district on Sat, July 24., the Turner for Congress campaign announced in a press release on Thursday. Volunteers can sign up here.

"Nina Turner has shown through years of public service that she is an effective legislator who can build coalitions and get things done without sacrificing her principles," AOC said in a statement. "She has the courage to ask for more and the skills to deliver. I can’t wait to travel to Ohio to knock doors for Nina Turner and help turn out the vote." A former Ohio senator and Bernie Sanders surrogate who co-chaired his 2016 campaign for president, Turner has been endorsed by AOG, 31, among a host of other prominent Democrats. Her campaign said Thursday that she and the popular New York congresswoman, the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, would be part of a get-out-the-vote strategy as the Aug 3 special congressional primary election nears, the general election of which is  Nov 2. Select wards in Cleveland will be included in the canvassing, including Ward 14, which has a significant Hispanic population.

More specifics are coming prior to that event and others scheduled in the greater Cleveland area with Turner and AOG on July 24, the campaign said.

The congressional seat at issue came open after former congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge resigned from Congress in early March to join President Joe Biden's cabinet as U.S. secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

Ohio's 11th congressional district includes most of Cleveland, mainly its majority Black east side, and several of its eastern suburbs of Cuyahoga County, and a Black pocket of Akron and a few of Akron's Summit County suburbs. It is roughly 53 percent Black and is of one of two majority minority districts in Ohio impacted by the redistricting provisions under the Civil Rights Act of 1965.

CLEVELAND, Ohio-The Black Women's Political Action Committee of greater Cleveland, which is led by Elaine Gohlstin, will host a nonpartisan political candidates meet-and-greet featuring this year's greater Cleveland and Cuyahoga County political candidates from 2 pm-4 pm on Sat, July 17, 2021 at the Harvard Community Services Center in Cleveland Ward 1 on the city's largely Black east side at 18240 Harvard Avenue.

The political event will be held outside on the lawn of the Harvard Community Services Center, and all are welcome, organizers said.

Gohlstin said that Democratic Ohio 11th congressional district candidates Nina Turner, a former Ohio senator and Bernie Sanders surrogate, Cuyahoga County Councilwoman and County Democratic Chairwoman Shontel Brown, former Ohio Senator Shirley Smith, the Rev Pamela Pinkney -Butts, the only activist in the race for Congress, and Cleveland mayoral candidate Ohio Sen Sandra Williams (D-21), a Democrat and the only woman in Cleveland's seven-way mayoral race will each speak briefly at 3 pm.

Former Ohio senator Jeff Johnson and former state Rep. John Barnes Jr, also in the crowed congressional race, have said they will be there too, Gohlstin said.

They are also Black, and Barnes grew-up in Ward 1,  which is part of the 12th house district that he represented as a state lawmaker.

Ward 1 is Cleveland' largest Black voting bloc and the second largest voting bloc of the city's 17 wards.

Brown and Turner, also a former Cleveland Ward 1 councilwoman and a Ward 1 resident, are front-runners in the multi-million dollar congressional race that has drawn big money campaign donations from across the country.

"This is a meet and greet open to the public and all candidates who attend will be recognized, including Blacks, whites, and others, and men, but with emphasis on Black women candidates," said Gohlstin, who added that others who have said they will attend include state Rep Stephanie Howse (D-11), who is running for a city council seat in Cleveland Ward 7, Cleveland mayoral candidates Zack Reed and Justin Bib, Woodmere Mayor Ben Holbert, Cleveland Councilmen Kevin Bishop (Ward 2), Michael Polensek (Ward 8), and Joe Jones, who leads Ward 1, and  Cleveland Hts. Councilwoman Davita Russell.

Ohio's largely Black congressional district includes most of Cleveland and several of its eastern suburbs of Cuyahoga County, and a majority Black pocket of Akron and staggering suburbs of Akron's Summit County.

Thirteen largely Black Democratic candidates, four of them women, are vying to replace former congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge, now the U.S. secretary of Housing and Urban Development. The winners of the special congressional Democratic and Republican primaries, which are Aug 3, will square-off for the Nov 2. general election.

The non-partisan primary election for Cleveland mayor is Sept.14 and the two candidates who get the most votes will square off on Nov. 2 for the general election.

Early voting began July 7 for the special congressional primary and will begin Aug 17 for the mayoral primary race in Cleveland, a majority Black city of some 385, 000 people that is currently led by four-term Black Mayor Frank Jackson, who is not seeking reelection this year to an unprecedented fifth term.

Both Cleveland and Cuyahoga County are Democratic strongholds run in large part by Democrats.
