WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Emilia Sykes (OH-13), an Akron Democrat who represents Ohio's 13th congressional district, introduced the Airship Improvement Research for Safety and Humanitarian Innovation Projects (AIRSHIP) Act, legislation that would support research into additional civil use cases for airships, often referred to as blimps

The congresswoman said it could also contribute to economic, sustainable and clean air cargo transportation, and would support disaster response efforts and provide humanitarian aid to people and areas in need.

“Ohio’s 13th congressional district is home to the most famous airship in the world – the Goodyear Blimp," said Sykes, one of three Black women in Congress from Ohio. "This legislation will continue to establish our community as a global leader in airship technology and it will encourage innovative uses of this method of transportation to address some of our nation’s most pressing problems."

The legislation has been endorsed by Goodyear, which is headquartered in Akron, and by the University of Akron.

The text of the bill can be found HERE, and a one-page summary can be found HERE.

The bill authorizes the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to create aeronautical research and technology initiatives for improved airship safety, noise, environmental impacts, and resiliency. It also gives NASA the authority to establish a program that awards grants to teams of aerospace researchers from universities, industry, and government to advance innovations in airship vehicle technology.

In the face of challenges such as global pandemics and climate related disasters, airships are uniquely capable of accessing remote locations or damaged landscapes and delivering resources and services where traditional aircraft often cannot.

Congresswoman Sykes says "the legislation would enable and reintroduce the world to practical, economical, and environmentally friendly airship transportation."

Breaking: Obama, AFT, endorse Kamala Harris for president....By Clevelandurbannews.com, Ohio's Black digital news leader

CLEVELAND, Ohio-The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and former President Barack Obama have endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, increasing her chances of beating former President Donald Trump and winning the White House in November as the contentious race for president of the United States continues.

The presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party following President Joe Biden's exit on Sunday from the race, Harris, 59 and also a former California state attorney general and U.S. senator, has become America's Democratic darling overnight and said Thursday that she appreciates Obama's coveted endorsement and that of former first lady Michelle O'bama, a power couple.

"We called to say Michelle and I couldn't be prouder to endorse you and do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office," Obama tells Harris over the phone per a video of the conversation posted online. And Michelle Obama tells Harris, "I am proud of you. This is going to be historic."

The endorsement from the Obama's, who called the upcoming November 5 presidential election historic,  comes a day after Harris secured the endorsement from the prominent AFT.

Addressing members of the AFT, the second largest teacher's union in America, at a rally on Thursday, Harris said she has always supported teachers unions and that she is a byproduct of public education.

She told rally participants that "I am a proud graduate of public education." And she urged unity among Democrats against Trump, saying Trump, the nominee for the Republican Party, and his allies are trying to take the country backwards.

"We are fighting for the future," Harris said after praising the work of the Biden-Harris administration and the president himself.

Whether the national excitement behind Harris stepping up to replace President Biden in the run for president will continue, especially among Democrats, both Black and White alike,  remains to be seen with the presidential election nearly three months away.

WHAT HAPPEN TO BIDEN RUNNING FOR REELECTION?

Amid health concerns, low poll numbers, and pressure from key congressional Democrats, Biden, 81, withdrew on Sunday as the presumptive nominee for president for the Democratic Party and urged Democrats to support Vice President Harris in his place, changing the political landscape as the Nov. 5, 2024 presidential election nears. In doing so he handed former President Donald Trump a vibrant and credential Black woman to compete against for the country's top executive job.

The nominee for the Republican Party as of Thursday night, Trump,78, lost reelection to Biden, 81, in 2020 and hopes to wiggle his way back into the White House in November with the support of voters and Republican operatives. He immediately began slinging rhetoric and dogging Harris at campaign rallies, much like he did Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential race.

If she wins in November Harris will become the nation's first Black and first female president.

The Democratic National Convention is set for Aug.19-22 in Chicago, Illinois, and a host of celebrities are expected to participate and join Democrats in saluting and promoting Harris as America's best choice for president.

WASHINGTON, D.C.-President Joe Biden withdrew on Sunday as the presumptive nominee for president for the Democratic Party and urged Democrats to support Vice President Kamala Harris in his place, changing the political landscape as the Nov. 5, 2024 presidential election nears and handing former President Donald Trump a vibrant Black woman to compete against.

The nominee for the Republican Party as of Thursday night, Trump,78, lost reelection to Biden, 81, in 2020 and hopes to wiggle his way back into the White House in November with the support of voters and Republican operatives.

President Biden's decision to withdraw from the race comes following mounting pressure from congressional and other Democrats after his poor performance in the June 27 first presidential debate showed signs of his deteriorating mental acuity and he came down with COVID-19 just last week. He is recovering from COVID at his home in Delaware with First Lady Dr. Jill Biden and other family members by his side.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your president. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote on his X account.

Democrats must now convince campaign donors  and voters to switch gears and back Harris, 59 and the country's first Black and first female vice president.

If she wins in November Harris will become the nation's first Black and first female president.

The Democratic National Convention is set for Aug.19-22 in Chicago, Illinois.

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin- Former President Donald Trump, the presumptive nominee for the Republican nomination for president, announced Monday afternoon that he has chosen Ohio U.S. Sen JD Vance as his vice presidential running mate.

Trump reportedly called Vance Monday morning to tell him the good news as the Republican Convention began Monday in  Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Vance chosen for the prominent role to run with Trump over Sens. Marco Rubio and Tim Scott, and North Dakota Gov. Doug Bergum.

An author, venture capitalist and former marine whom Trump endorsed for senator before he won the seat over former congressman Tim Ryan in 2022, Vance, a Harvard graduate, is 39-years-old, nearly 40 years younger than the 78-year-old Trump.

Sources said that some Republicans wanted Vance in an effort  to counter Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in a potential run by Harris for president in 2028.

Trump and President Joe Biden are the respective presumptive nominees for the Republican and Democratic parties with the Nov 5 presidential election nearing.

The nation's first female and first Black vice president, Harris purportedly  told reporters Monday that she is more than ready to debate Vance before this year's presidential election. She wrote in a post on Facebook that "Vance supports a nationwide abortion ban and voted to block protections for IVF."

Articulate and clean cut, Vance is not well-known among traditional voters but is known in political circles. He rose to fame in 2016 with his memoir, "Hillbilly Elegy," which documents his upbringing in Appalachia.
