Arlington, Texas-Former Cleveland Glenville High School student and the Ohio State University Quarterback Cardale Jones (pictured) led his team to a 42-20 victory over Oregon State Monday night at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas to win the national college football championship. (Editor's note: Jones passed on an opportunity to enter the NFL draft this year and said that his priority is to graduate from college. The 6'5 250 pound Jones is in his sophomore year at OSU).

The Buckeyes defeated #1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide 42-35 in the Allstate Sugar Bowl to advance to the College Football Playoff National Championship against the Oregon Ducks.

Against the Ducks, and for the national championship win, Jones recorded 280 all-purpose yards, completed 16 of 23 attempted passes for 242 yards and one touchdown, and scored on a one-yard run.

"I'm happy for Cardale and I'm glad that Ohio State won the national championship ," said Cleveland Ward 6 Councilwoman Mamie Mitchell.Mitchell said that the Cleveland Municipal School District has been turning out talent in sports and academically for a long time, and that it is exceptionally gratifying to know that Jones is a product of Cleveland schools.

Ohio State University Head Football Coach Urban Meyer

With Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota as its quarterback, the Ducks were favored to beat the Buckeyes Monday night in the arena where the Dallas Cowboys play. But fate, and obviously talent, brought home a win for the team and its head coach, Urban Meyer, 50.

Meyer won his third national title as a head coach, the other two wins of which came at Florida,  one in 2006, and the other in 2008.

Head Football Coach Ted Ginn Sr.

Jones attended Glenville High School in Cleveland, Ohio, where he played football for Ted Ginn, Sr., leading the Tarblooders to the OHSAA D-I Championship game in 2009.[1] He enrolled in Ohio State in 2012 and entered the 2014 season as a red shirt sophomore . Initially a third stringer, Jones made his first real start of his college career last year in the Big Ten Championship Game and led the #6 (AP) ranked Buckeyes squad to a 59-0 victory over the #11 ranked Wisconsin Badgers] Jones was named MVP of the game. He started two more times thereafter, the last time during Monday's championship title game.

Councilwoman Mitchell said that Jones is smart and played it cool on the sidelines at OSU until it was time for him to shine.

"When he was third string he was watching and studying and that is what makes a great athlete," said Mitchell.
