CLEVELAND, Ohio- Ann R. Romans (pictured), 84, of Marietta, Georgia and a native of Cleveland, Ohio passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2014. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 11 at the Church of the Covenant Presbyterian Church at 11205 Euclid Ave in Cleveland with a wake at 1 pm and funeral services at 2 pm. Mrs. Romans moved to Marietta seven years ago to be with her daughter, son-in-law, and three of her six grandchildren. She retired as a school teacher with the Cleveland Public School System. She earned a master's of education from John Carroll University in University Heights at the age of 67, and was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
Mrs Romans was a member of the grassroots community activists groups G-PAC and the Carl Stokes Brigade and she loved politics and was active with the 11th Congressional District Caucus under then Congressman Louis Stokes, who has since retired, and under the late Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones, who succeeded Stokes. She was also a Cleveland area community activist who fought against alleged housing discrimination in Shaker Heights, Ohio and against the mistreatment of Blacks students, teachers and administrators in Cleveland schools in the 1990s. She rode a motorcycle even in recent years at the annual 11th Congressional District Caucus Annual Parade, an event initiated by Stokes and also sponsored by Tubbs Jones and current Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus of Blacks in Congress , and a Warrensville Heights Democrat whose majority Black congressional district includes the largely Black cities of Cleveland, East Cleveland and Warrensville Heights.
Her son-in-law, Palmer Williams Jr., is an actor who plays the barber in Tyler Perry's sitcom House of Payne.
Romans was preceded in death by 14 siblings: Calvin, Rainey, Augusta, Curtis, Cecil, Alberta, Julie Bell, Annie Maria, Valeria, Cateria, Maerener, Veolia, Arelia, and one at child birth.
Survivors include son Anthony Jones (Loretta) of Shaker Heights, OH;
daughter Annetta Williams (Palmer, Jr.) of Marietta, GA; and six grandchildren, Aryanna Jones, Anthony Jones II, Nia Williams, Palmer Williams III, Luke Williams and Tierney Stewart.(www.clevelandurbannews.com) / (www.kathywraycolemanonlinenewsblog.com)
