CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM, CLEVELAND, Ohio- The Democratic National Committee announced this week that the Fourth Democratic Debate for the 2020 Democratic nomination for president will be held Oct.15 at Otterbein University, a private liberal college in Westerville, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus, Ohio's largest city and the state capital.
The top tier Democratic candidates for president are former vice president Joe Biden and U.S. SEns. Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris, all of them among some 20 presidential hopefuls in a crowd of some 20 Democratic wannabes.
CNN anchors Erin Burnett and Anderson Cooper and New York Times national editor Mark Lacey will moderate, organizers said.
Ohio is a pivotal state for presidential elections that Republican President Donald Trump won over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016 and is struggling to keep red in 2020.
The criteria set by the DNC for the fourth debate are the same as the third debate held at Southern University in Houston, Texas Thursday night, which required that a candidate secure at least $130,000 from individual donors as well as poll at no less than two percent in four qualifying polls, the last two debates requiring only that a candidate secure at least 65,000 from 200 donors in 20 different states, and reach at least one percent in three qualifying polls.
Ten candidates debated in Houston for the third debate and at least 11 candidates will take to the stage relative to the fourth debate, new candidate Tom Meyer, a billionaire and climate change activist, this week qualifying for the fourth debate after narrowly getting shut out of the third debate in spite of spending a couple million dollars in an effort to qualify.
The first and second Democratic debates, the first in Miami and the second in Detroit, had 20 candidates for each debate, both spread out over two nights.
Sources say the Fourth Democratic Debate will likely be just one night.
