CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM-TOLEDO, Ohio- Ohio Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, a Toledo Democrat whose ninth congressional district extends to Cleveland and the longest serving woman in Congress, was hit by a construction backhoe on Tuesday in her hometown of Toledo while driving her car near a construction zone about 11:15 am in the through lane of traffic,

The backhoe’s bucket reportedly swung into the lane reserved for traffic and hit the driver’s-side windshield of Kaptur’s 2005 Ford Five Hundred, crushing parts of the car.

"Congresswoman Kaptur was driving East on W Bancroft St. in Toledo in a single lane, construction zone when a backhoe operating in the adjoining lane swung over into the lane reserved for through traffic and hit her windshield on the driver's side," said Kaptur spokesman Griffin Anderson in a press statement on Wednesday to Clevelandurbannews.com and Kathywraycolemanonlinenewsblog.com .

Anderson said the congresswoman was examined at a local hospital and will resume her normal schedule in the morning.

"Congresswoman Kaptur extends thanks to the professional first responders from Toledo police and fire departments who offered immediate assistance," said Anderson.

Greater Cleveland community activists and women's advocates said they are pleased the congresswoman was not seriously injured.

"We are pleased that Ohio Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, the longest serving woman in Congress and a fighter in Congress for the nation's most vulnerable, was not seriously injured in the car crash," said Kathy Wray Coleman, a former biology teacher and Black Cleveland activist who leads the Imperial Women Coalition and is an organizer of Women's March Cleveland. "It reminds us that life is precious as we continue our fight for equal opportunity for people across the board, including Blacks, women and children."

Kaptur, 73 and serving her 19th term in Congress, was returning from a local pantry after dropping off vegetables from her garden when the accident occurred.

No one was cited relative to the crash.

Congress has been out on recess since less month and is scheduled to return Sept. 9.

Kaptur is one of four Democratic congress persons from Ohio who also include 11th Congressional District Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge, a Warrensville Heights Democrat who is one of two Blacks in congress from Ohio and whose congressional district includes most of the majority Black areas between Cleveland and Akron and several of Cleveland's eastern suburbs, Joyce Beatty of Columbus, who is Black, and Rep. Tim Ryan, a Youngstown area Democrat and presidential candidate.
