CLEVELAND URBAN NEWS.COM-CLEVELAND, Ohio- Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine announced Thursday that Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted has suspended his campaign for governor to become his running mate for the 2018 election that just heated up.
Husted will run for lieutenant governor on DeWine's ticket.
Other GOP candidates in the race are Lt Gov Mary Taylor and U.S. Rep Jim Renacci.
Democratic candidates for governor include former congresswoman Betty Sutton, state Rep. Connie Pillage, Dayton Mayor Jan Whaley, state Sen Joe Schiavoni, and Ohio Supreme Court Justice Bill O'Neil.
DeWine, 70, said during a press conference on Thursday that he was pleased to have Husted on his team and that Husted "brings experience, he brings leadership, he brings ideas. He brings passion, and he brings great compassion."
Husted said Thursday that his decision to forgo a bid for governor to join DeWine's team is in the best interest of the Republican Party.
"Had I continued my run for governor, Mike and I would have fought a brutal campaign that would have left the winner bruised and broken with only a few months to rebuild in time for the general election," Husted said.
Ohio Dems say both DeWine and Husted are too far to the right for the average American.
"By joining the ticket of former Senator Mike DeWine, Jon Husted officially abandoned his campaign slogan of a new generation of leadership, said Melissa Miller, a spokesperson for the Ohio Democratic Party. "Husted once jabbed at DeWine's age, saying new would not be the way to describe that."
Miller said also that DeWine and Husted "both spent the primary cozing up to Donald Trump and endorsing far-right positions."
