ELMONT, New York-American Pharoah, ridden by veteran jockey Victor Espinoza, won the 147th running of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, and thus the Triple Crown, moving Affirmed aside, the last race horse to win the Triple Crown, and in 1978.

The stage was set to win after a win at the 141st  running of the Kentucky Derby May 2 at Churchill Downs in Louisville before a crowd of some 170,00 people, and then a victory at the Preakness.

"I feel like the luckiest Mexican on earth," said Espinoza last month after winning the Kentucky Derby. "It's unbelievable."

After winning on Saturday, Espinoza said "I feel so good."

A premier thoroughbred race horse  trained by Bob Baffert, American Pharaoh is the 12th race horse to win the coveted Triple Crown ,and was the favorite for the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes.  At Belmont he took the lead from the starting gate, and ran away with the race on the final stretch.

Fourteen horses before American Pharoah and after Affirmed had won both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, but they could not win Belmont too, to win the prestigious Triple Crown.

Frosted, who game in fourth at the Kentucky Derby,  finished second Saturday, and Keen Ice placed third.

The Kentucky Derby, held annually at Churchill Downs in Louisville, is always the first Saturday in May, with the Preakness in Baltimore, Maryland held two weeks later, and the Belmont Stakes in Elmont, New York three weeks after that, but never before June 5 or after June 11 for the Belmont Stakes.
