WASHINGTON D.C. — U.S. Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-3), a Columbus Democrat and currently the only Black in Congress from Ohio, was arrested on Thursday during a Day of Action voting rights demonstration in Washington D.C.
Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Beatty was reportedly arrested around 3:30 p.m. in the Hart Senate Office Building and was one of nine people arrested in the building's atrium.
"Fight for justice" supporters chanted as Beatty was taken into custody and handcuffed.
Beatty issued a statement on Twitter that said, "I stand in solidarity with Black women and allies across the country in defense of our constitutional right to vote."
The congresswoman said that "we have come too far and fought too hard to see everything systematically dismantled and restricted by those who wish to silence us."
According to WSYX, U.S. Capitol Police said the group was arrested for "demonstrating in a prohibited area on Capitol grounds." The demonstrators were issued several warnings to stop before those who refused were arrested.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOG) to campaign in Cleveland for Nina Turner on Sat., July 24 as the August 3 special Democratic primary nears, Turner, of Cleveland, the front runner in a crowded congressional primary race...By editor Kathy Wray Coleman
CLEVELAND, Ohio- U.S. Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-14), a progressive New York Democrat and Sen. Bernie Sanders ally, and a member of the "Squad," a nickname given to AOC and a group of three other progressive congresswomen of color who are not afraid to challenge the status quo in Washington, will campaign with front-runner congressional candidate Nina Turner across Ohio's largely Black 11th congressional district on Sat, July 24., the Turner for Congress campaign announced in a press release on Thursday. Volunteers can sign up here.
"Nina Turner has shown through years of public service that she is an effective legislator who can build coalitions and get things done without sacrificing her principles," AOC said in a statement. "She has the courage to ask for more and the skills to deliver. I can’t wait to travel to Ohio to knock doors for Nina Turner and help turn out the vote." A former Ohio senator and Bernie Sanders surrogate who co-chaired his 2016 campaign for president, Turner has been endorsed by AOG, 31, among a host of other prominent Democrats. Her campaign said Thursday that she and the popular New York congresswoman, the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, would be part of a get-out-the-vote strategy as the Aug 3 special congressional primary election nears, the general election of which is Nov 2. Select wards in Cleveland will be included in the canvassing, including Ward 14, which has a significant Hispanic population.
More specifics are coming prior to that event and others scheduled in the greater Cleveland area with Turner and AOG on July 24, the campaign said.
The congressional seat at issue came open after former congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge resigned from Congress in early March to join President Joe Biden's cabinet as U.S. secretary of Housing and Urban Development.
Ohio's 11th congressional district includes most of Cleveland, mainly its majority Black east side, and several of its eastern suburbs of Cuyahoga County, and a Black pocket of Akron and a few of Akron's Summit County suburbs. It is roughly 53 percent Black and is of one of two majority minority districts in Ohio impacted by the redistricting provisions under the Civil Rights Act of 1965.
