WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today is the fourth anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision on June 24, 2022, to overturn or strike down Roe v Wade, its landmark 1973 ruling that gave federal protection for abortion access to women nationwide. In turn, the nation's high court, in a decision titled Dobbs v. Mississippi Health Organization, handed authority over abortion and reproductive rights to the respective state legislatures.

“Roe v. Wade protected generations of women's right to make personal medical decisions for years," said Ohio Congresswoman Emilia Sykes in a previous statement. "When it was overturned in 2022, fundamental rights were stripped away."

Although voters in Ohio, in November 2023, approved a ballot measure that enshrined the legal right to abortion access in the Ohio Constitution, it remains an uphill battle against Republicans seeking to thwart the win on the state and national levels, including efforts to ban the abortion pill, Mifepristone.

Cleveland activist and organizer Kathy Wray Coleman, who is Black and and leads Women's March Cleveland, and has organized dozens of marches for reproductive rights, said "the fight for reproductive rights for women in Cleveland and Northeast Ohio is exhausting, and it is not over."

"We will continue the fight in the streets and at the ballot box," said Coleman, "and this November we urge women and their supporters to vote for politicians who will fight for women and Black people."
