CLEVELAND, Ohio—The Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Miami Heat 121-100 Sunday evening at a packed Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse arena in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, winning Game 1 of the Eastern Conference playoffs, a best-of-five-games series leading up to the Eastern Conference Finals, and ultimately the NBA Finals.
The Cavaliers, the number one Seed in the Eastern Conference, and head coach Kenny Atkinson have their eyes on the NBA Championship trophy, and so do Cleveland fans, Cleveland a largely Black major American city and the second largest city in Ohio, behind Columbus, the state capital.
Cavs star shooting guard Donovan Mitchell, who shot 11 of 19 from the field and scored 30 points, told reporters after the game that "we took care of our first job at home," as the Cavs prepare for Game 2. It is Wed., April 23, also at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
Cleveland has not won an NBA championship since 2016 when megastar Lebron James, who now plays for the Los Angeles Lakers at 40 years old, was a member of the team.
