CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM, Cleveland, Ohio – Today, former Cleveland mayor Jane Campbell, the city's only female mayor in history, endorsed nonprofit business executive Justin Bibb for mayor at a meet and greet with West Park residents on Cleveland's west side, Bibb the top vote getter among seven all Democratic mayoral candidates on the ballot for the Sept 14 nonpartisan primary.
A youthful looking 34-year-old Black man who interned with former president Barack Obama when Obama was a junior U.S. senator representing Illinois, Bibb will face Council President Kevin Kelley, 53, for a Nov 2 runoff, Kelley a White west side councilman and establishment candidate endorsed by current mayor Frank Jackson and a handful of council persons, among others.
"I was our city's 56th mayor. I know what it takes to lead our city, and Justin has the bold vision and energy to lead real change," said Campbell, a White woman and former state representative who served one term as mayor from 2002-2006 and was ousted in a close election by then council president Frank Jackson, the city's retiring four-term Black mayor.
Bibb was elated with the endorsement and said he is appreciative of Campbell's support of his candidacy.
"Mayor Campbell was a trailblazer for the city and I'm honored to have her endorsement and support," Bibb said in a press release on Thursday to Clevelandurbannews.com and Kathywraycolemanonlinenewsblog.com," Ohio's Black digital news leader. "She [Campbell] led the city after the September 11 terrorist attacks and stabilized the budget in the face of an economic recession. Mayor Campbell confronted crisis after crisis with compassion and competence, and it's those leadership qualities I will bring to the job."
Campbell's endorsement of Bibb follows a list of prominent endorsements he has received, including that of the Cleveland Plain Dealer Newspaper, Ohio's largest newspaper, and former three-term Black mayor Michael R. White, Campbell's predecessor.
Campbell, 68, said that although Justin has never held public office she believes he can win in November, and that if elected, he will inject "a new brand of leadership to the city."
The former mayor said that she sees Bibb as the best of the two candidates to move the largely Black major American city of some 372,000 people forward.
"Justin Bibb brings hope for Cleveland's future. He will push the limits and break the status quo mentality that delays and denies progress. He'll bring best practice programs and fresh ideas to a city government stuck in the past," said Campbell.
Ohio Mayors Alliance joins President Biden in calling on Congress to raise the debt limit as a government shutdown looms, the White House said in a press release to Clevelandurbannews.com and Kathywraycolemanonlinenewsblog.com
The statement follows a fact sheet from the White House last week that warned of the consequences failing to raise the debt limit could have on states and cities and the United States Conference of Mayors sounding the alarm to the severe repercussions the default would have on local economies. If Congress fails to act, the U.S. could – for the first time in history – default on its obligations, threatening a recession and drastic cuts to an array of state and local priorities.
The Ohio mayors signing the statement demanding that Congress increase the debt limit are as follows:
Mayor Christina Muryn, Findlay (R)
Mayor Don Patterson, Kettering (R)
Mayor Tim DeGeeter, Parma (D)
Mayor Tito Brown, Youngstown (D)
Grandson of Democratic Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, Frank Q. Jackson, shot and killed....This article is by editor Kathy Wray Coleman of Clevelandurbannews.com and Kathywraycolemanonlinenewsblog.com

CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM-CLEVELAND, Ohio-Frank Q. Jackson, the 24-year-old grandson of Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, was shot multiple times and killed Sunday night at a home in the Kinsman neighborhood on the city's largely Black east side.
Police were called to the shooting near Sidaway and E. 70th St. in the Garden Valley projects at around 9 p.m and have not released any details about a possible suspect.
A $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest in the case, police said.
Mayor Jackson, who was escorted by police into and out of the home where the shooting incident occurred, was on the scene for much of the night as were Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams and Ward 6 Councilman Blaine Griffin.
Jackson is the city's four-term Black mayor who has opted not to seek an unprecedented fifth term this year with newcomer Justin Bibb a possible successor.
Bibb, 34, is Black and led in votes over six other candidates for mayor relative to last Tuesday's primary election. He will face off with second place finisher Council President Kevin Kelley via the Nov 2 nonpartisan general election.
The mayor's grandson, who is actually his step-grandson and the grandson of his longtime wife Edwina Jackson, has been in the news multiple times in recent months.
He was charged with domestic violence following an argument with his girlfriend back in 2020 and in July he was charged with felonious assault on a police officer and failure to comply with a police officer's order, a first and fourth degree felony respectively.
The latest charges stem from a traffic stop in Parma the night of Jan 23 that turned contentious when the younger Jackson decided to flee police and took them on a high speed car chase that crossed city lines into Cleveland and reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.
He faced a fine and up to 10 years in prison if convicted, and was out of jail on bond.
At the time of the chase a Cleveland warrant was pending against him on a first degree misdemeanor charge of domestic violence regarding a Dec. 18 encounter in which he is alleged to have struck his girlfriend in the head and face after a verbal altercation over baby diapers for the child they had together.
According to Parma police records, the younger Jackson was pulled over by Parma police shortly before midnight, allegedly for tinted windows.
After purportedly agreeing to a police search of his car he took off in his automobile before it could be searched by police.
The two White police officers present at the traffic stop grabbed him after he would not exit his car as allegedly ordered and, according to police body cams and a dash cam, one of the cops hung on to him temporarily as his car pulled away.
The cop at issue was not hurt, a Parma police spokesperson later said.
Though Parma police were in hot pursuit after he fled he was able to escape them after he reached Cleveland's west side near Steel-Yard Commons.
He turned himself in at the Parma Police Station the next morning and was cited for having tinted windows and charged in Parma with failure to comply with a police officer's order, a fourth degree felony.
He was later transferred from the Parma jail to the Cuyahoga County Jail and subsequently indicted by a county grand jury on felony assault on a police officer, a first degree felony, and failure to comply with a police order, a fourth degree felony. He had pleaded not guilty in that case.
While failure to comply with a police officer's order is typically prosecuted as a misdemeanor offense in most cases in Ohio, certain aggravating factors can make the alleged crime a felony, such as fleeing and eluding after committing a felony, or after causing serious harm.
When he took Parma police on a wild car chase Frank Q. Jackson was already on probation relative to a plea deal before Common Pleas Judge John O'Donnell that came following a 2019 indictment on felonious assault, abduction charges and two counts of failure to comply with police in which he was accused of punching and choking a young 18-year-old Black woman, and striking her with a metal truck hitch.
In that case he agreed to plead guilty to misdemeanor assault in exchange for dismissal of the felonious assault and other charges.
In turn, Judge O'Donnell handed him a suspended 90 day sentence and put him on probation for 18 months.
In spite of his run ins with the law the mayor's grandson was loved, the mayor once telling reporters in response to the controversy surrounding his grandson that he loves his family just like others do.

CLEVELAND, Ohio– After losing the first game of the regular NFL season to the Kansas City Chiefs last week, the Cleveland Browns won their season home opener Sunday afternoon against the Houston Texans at a sold out FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland, a win that makes them 1-1 on the season.
FirstEnergy Stadium has a seating capacity of 67, 895 people, and Browns fans were up in arms practically the entire game.
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters during a press conference after the game that the crowd was outstanding and that Sunday's victory over the Texans was "a good team win."
Andy Janovich ran in the first touchdown of the game, a one-yard touchdown run for the Browns, which was followed by a field goal.
Longtime Texans quarterback Davis Mills completed 10-of-11 passes for 125 yards, and would find Tyrod Taylor, who brought in the first touchdown for the Texans, followed by a field goal.
Taylor would also run for a second touchdown for the Texans, bringing the score to a 13-7 over the Browns before the Browns made their second field goal of the game.
Even with Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry not suiting up due to injuries, Browns Quarterback Baker Mayfield led his team to victory with 19 of 21 passing, and with 213 yards and one touch down, though he did have one interception. That five-yard running touchdown by Mayfield came after a second quarter shoulder injury that took him to the locker room where he returned thereafter and led his team on a 74 yard drive to tie the game at 14-14 at halftime.
After half time the Browns, following a mediocre first half, won the third quarter, scoring 10 unanswered points.
Mayfield would execute a wide receiver film to rookie Demetric Felton Jr., who went 33 yards for the touchdown, and Chase McLaughlin added a field goal to bring the Brown's lead to 24-14.
The Texans would answer with a 16 play drive and two-yard touchdown run by Brandon Cooks, and a field goal, which would bring the score to within three at 24-21. But the Browns would respond with a 26- yard rushing touchdown run off the right side by Nick Chubb into the end zone, and then with a field goal. This would bring the score to 31-21, which would be the final score of the game, and a win for the Browns.
In addition to one touch down, Chubb, a running back and 2018 second-round draft pick for the Browns, rushed 95 yards on 11 carries.
Sunday's game against the Texans at FirstEnergy Stadium was, no doubt, a rebound win for their loss last week against the Kansas City Chiefs, whom the Browns lost to in the 2020 AFC Divisional Round. And while last Sunday's loss to the Chiefs was heart-wrenching for Browns fans, the loss itself was not at all surprising.
The Browns lost 22-17 to the Chiefs to end last year's season after making the playoffs for the first time in 18 years, and the Chiefs, the AFC champion at the time, went on to lose to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at last year's Super Bowl.
The Browns will play their third regular season game on Sunday, Sept 26, a home game against the Chicago Bears.
