CLEVELAND URBAN NEWS.COM-CLEVELAND, Ohio-The Ohio Democratic Party (ODP) will hold its 2017 Legacy Dinner, a tribute to  the late John Glenn, a former Ohio U.S. senator and the first American to orbit the earth,  on Saturday, April 22, at the Ohio Expo

Center in downtown Columbus, Ohio, with U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown as the dinner’s featured speaker.

An Ohioan, Glenn died Dec. 8, 2016 at the age of 95.

Former president Barack Obama, America's first Black president and a Democrat like Glenn, bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Glenn at a White House ceremony in 2012.

"He [Glenn] always had the right stuff, inspiring generations of scientists, engineers and astronauts," said Obama, shortly after Glenn's death late last year.

Born July 18, 1921 in Cambridge, Ohio and raised in Concord, Ohio, Glenn was a distinguished Marine Corps pilot in Korea and World War ll before joining NASA as an astronaut and orbiting earth three times in 1962, the first to do so from American soil.

He resigned from NASA in 1964 and won a U.S. senate seat in 1974, where he served until 1999.

He was succeeded in congress by the late and former U.S. senator George Voinovich, a Republican and former mayor of the city of Cleveland.

In addition to Sen. Brown, a Cleveland Democrat up for re-election next year, three announced Democratic candidates for governor, former state Rep. Connie Pillich, Senate Democratic Leader Joe Schiavoni, and former U.S. Rep. Betty Sutton, will also speak at the dinner, ODP Chairman David Pepper said in a press release to Cleveland Urban News.Com, Ohio's most read digital Black newspaper.

Republicans swept all of Ohio's statewide offices in November 2014, namely  Gov John Kasich, a 2016 unsuccessful candidate for president who is term-limited, Attorney General Mike DeWine, Secretary of State Jon Husted, Treasurer Josh Mandel, Auditor Dave Yost, and Supreme Court Justices Judith French and Sharon Kennedy.

Republican gubernatorial possible's include Husted, DeWine, also a former U.S. senator, U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci of Wadsworth, and former Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor, who recently resigned to give more focus to her gubernatorial campaign.

Treasurer Mandel announced late last year that he will make another run for Brown's seat next year, after failing to seat the liberal U.S. senator in 2012.

United states senators serve six-year terms.

Mandel lost to Brown in 2012 by six percentage points, the same year Obama won re-election for president over Republican nominee Mitt Romney.
